Choose between riding and hiking (packhorses will carry your stuff either way). And choose your level of guiding — nomad horseman only or full specialized guiding and cultural interpretation. On this trip, some hiking is required (the horses cannot carry you down off the pass on day 1.
Day 1: Meet in Xinduqiao for a car to Pengbuxi, where you will stay in a family farmhouse, located above a deep river valley.
Day 2: Drive to trek trek start over high Tsemei pass, and then hike to Gongka Monastery, where you will eat and stay. View the sunset over the peak.
Day 3: Enjoy a long trek today to Yulongxi Village winter pasture in Buchi Valley, though otherworldy live oak forest climbing slowly to open grassland. Stay outside a small nomad hut at 3800 m; eat on animal skins indoors. 18 kms.
Day 4: Today, a shorter hike with an option to dip in freezing cold glacial water at lunchtime. View of hike peaks all day. Sleep in high cold place below the pass. 4300 m, 12 kms
Day 5: Lovely day hike over Riwoche Pass (4950 meters) and down to a glacial lake off the main path, with high moraines. Sleep below the lake at 4500 meters. 9 kms.
Day 6: Hike down to a camp in the Lower Riwoche Valley, heavily used caterpillar fungus camp. 3800 meters, 12 kms.
Day 7: Trek to Laoyulin, through lovely forest. Car to Kangding and finish. (3 hour hike, 1 hour drive, 3700 meters)
Horse riding 6-7 hours per day, hiking 8-9 hours per day. As a hike, this is quite strenuous. Horse riding is medium difficulty with some hiking required. Includes all meals, horses (either riding or pack-horses), guiding, tents, and car from Xinduqiao and then to Kangding (one way). Sleeping bags and pads can be rented for an extra nominal charge.
