Learn about yaks — herding, packing, milking, plus cheese, yogurt, and butter making. Then learn still more about Tibetan culture with a temple tour at Nyelum temple, where original thangka paintings are preserved. All yak pack treks include experienced English-speaking cultural guide and instructor.
Day 1: Meet your yaks in the morning at the lodge, and help with packing. Set out onto the high Lhagang plateau herding the yaks, and then stay with nomads this evening. Bring the whole herd of yaks in, and bring baby yaks into the tents. Enjoy dinner with the family.
Day 2: In the morning, do milking and butter and cheese making before returning to the lodge across the high plateau. On the way stop for a tour of Nyelum Temple, whose old thangka paintings can teach us about both the history of Tibetan painting and Buddhism.
Best in Summer but ok all times of year (Nov-May staying in a hut rather than a tent). Horse riding 5-6 hours per day, hiking 8-9 hours per day. Horse riding is at a walking pace. Includes all meals, pack yaks, yak packing and horse tack up instruction, horses, and horse and yak men, nomad homestay and workshop, and English instruction.
Tents are also provided. Sleeping bags and mats can be rented. Trekkers can book Ecolodge Rooms for a 15% discount. First book the trek and receive a discount code, then book your room.
