13-Day Farm and Nomad Kham Tour
With farm and nomad homestays (not hotels posing as homestays)
Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu. Your guide will pick you up and drive you to Kangding, a traditional Tibet/China border town. Visit Droma Monastery here, and then enjoy your first Tibetan meal. Then drive on to Zhonggu, and stay in a family-run local guesthouse with a very nice hot spring beside the river.
Day 2: Drive to Tagong. On the way, visit an 8th-century 12-sided tower. Then onto the Ecolodge.
Day 3: Take a one-day horse ride into the high mountains, and stay the night with nomads on the high plateau.
Day 4: Ride again across the grasslands, visiting an old hermitage in a rocky outcrop on the way. Stay at the ecolodge.
Day 5: Drive north to Garze town. Tour the Garze Monastery. Stay in a farming homestay near here.
Day 6: Drive to Dzogchen Monastery, tour the monastery and high meditation caves with your guide. Then drive to Manigango. Stay in a simple hotel here.
Day 7: Drive to Dege over Trola Pass. If possible, cross over the high, 5050 meter pass. Then visit Dege Town. Stay the night in a nice hotel here.
Day 8: Tour the Dege Printing House, an original scripture printing house active since 1750. Then drive on to Dzongsar. Stay in a family-run small guesthouse here.
Day 9: Visit the nearby incense and jewelry making workshops here, then stay a second night with the family.
Day 10: Drive to Baiyu, visit the city. Stay in a nice hotel here.
Day 11: Drive to Litang. If possible, visit Yarchen Gar, a religious encampment, on the way. Then stay in a farm homestay near Litang.
Day 12: Tour the Litang Monastery and the old town, then drive to Ragnaka, and stay at the home of your guide.
Day 13: Return to Chengdu.
